Thursday Thoughts on Reading and Writing
Where is your favorite place to be when you read a book? Do you need complete silence around you and you go to the public library? Maybe you like to read in a special chair, just for you. Perhaps you read in bed to wind down from the day before it’s time to sleep. If it’s a good book you may read till way past your bedtime.
I have a chair in the den that the family knows is “my chair.” That’s where I prefer to read. But sometimes I don’t get around to reading until early evening and by then the TV is on and will be on till my bedtime. Some evenings I can shut out the inane stuff on TV; but when I read a book that requires my 100 percent concentration, my chair won’t work with the TV playing in the same room.
In that case I go to the bedroom, meticulously move the pillows around to set up “my place,” stretch out, and continue reading. The other sounds in the house dim as I get into my book.
If you’re a writer—letters, emails, articles, books—where is your favorite place to write? Do you have a designated space especially for you? Do you have an office? Or maybe you write on the kitchen table or on a lapboard.
When I'm away from home it's a pleasure to read or write by the seashore. At home my writing space is a desk in the corner of a bedroom. Writing takes my complete concentration and when I get started, hardly ever will anything around me become a distraction. Sometimes I like to work out a scene by handwriting with a lapboard across my knees..
I keep a notepad and pen at my bedside in case an idea pops into my head before sleep overtakes me or when an idea hits me in the middle of the night. I’ve had some ideas I didn’t write down and, believe me, it’s almost impossible to retrieve them in the light of day. At times I’ve used a flashlight to see how to write those ideas on that pad at the moment they enter my brain; I’ve even written them down in the dark—hard to make out my chicken scratching later!
Reading and writing is my fun of choice; I’m glad I don’t have to pick which I like better. If you’re a reader or a writer, where is your favorite place to read or write? What do you enjoy about reading or writing?
“People rarely succeed unless they have fun in what they are doing.”
Till next time ... keep on smiling.
