“This the sign of the covenant … between me and
all life on the earth.”
Genesis
9:17
Only a
reckless driver ignores a stop sign. A blinking yellow traffic light gets our
attention, and we drive with caution through an intersection. We don't
challenge "Beware of the Dog" warnings on fences. From sad experience, we usually pay attention to signs.
God
rewarded Noah's faith by promising him never again to destroy humankind with
flood waters. God sealed the covenant with a sign that all future generations
would recognize, a sign that would signify God's faithfulness to keep his word.
God's rainbow
is a timeless thing of beauty for all peoples. It bridges cultures and
politics.
We're
still under that same covenant today. Whenever we see a rainbow spanning the
sky, we can know God's word is permanent and true. Only God could form those
ribbons of brilliant hues and stretch them across the sky in perfect harmony.
Only God
would seal a promise with such beauty. What a reminder of the permanence and
truth of God's word! What a mighty God we serve!
