THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN
by Diane Dean White
Diane started her writing career in a southern town
where she did reporting, and wrote her first column "Yankee Viewpoint's." They returned to Michigan, where she did stringer work, ancestral history, and donor appeal letters for non-profit organizations, while doing her favorite job...a stay-at-home Mom. Diane became a columnist for a weekly magazine for four years. She is the author of over three-hundred short stories, and seven books. She and hubby, Stephen, have been married for forty-four years, and they are the parents of three grown children and three grand-gals. They live in the Sunshine state.
Welcome, Diane. If you could have dinner with one person from today or history (except Jesus) who would it be? Why?
Aw…King Solomon…I’d like to eat the food from this time, and see the man and hear more wisdom flow from his mouth.
What do you enjoy most about writing?
It’s the fun of creating a plot and using imaginary people to weave a story. I take myself out of the reality of my day, and although research is time consuming and necessary, I love seeing everything as it comes together within a full circle. I trust the Lord and seek His direction in all of my writing. After numerous rewrites, I can’t wait to write THE END.
Do you have a dedicated place to write, or a nook or corner of a room, or the kitchen table?
Yes, a spare bedroom works nicely as my office. I have a back injury so I use a chaise lounge with a portable keyboard on my lap. My computer is next to me on a table with my printer, and photos of my book-signings are above on the wall. A painting my grandmother did is over an old desk, bookshelves, and other special wall-hangings are on the opposite side. I have a wicker table next to me under my window which holds an aloe plant, a dish of seashells and a few other fun things.
What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?
I’m always happy to hear when someone likes my book, and then does a review. I don’t think readers realize how important these are for authors, and I encourage those who share how much they enjoy one of my books, to please follow it up with a review. Word of mouth is an excellent way to share how much readers enjoy books, and I’m grateful for that and Facebook postings.
Please tell us a little about your novel, This Side of Heaven.
“Only one hurdle and they were free to fall in love.”
Darlene arrives in rural Georgia with her two preschoolers to escape an abusive marriage. In hiding, she struggles to adjust to a secretive life among the pecan trees and gardenias. Then comes an unexpected visit from a neighbor.
Detective Brett Gafee is married to his job and his community, and heir to large pecan orchards. Expectations of a loving relationship dwindle over the years, and he sets aside all thoughts of marriage. Then he introduces himself to Darlene.
Darlene’s secret past keeps her at bay from both Brett and her feelings. Can she be true to her heart and to Brett? When the truth comes out, will Brett pick up the pieces, or will he walk away?

Any parting comment?
In all my books I seek God’s direction, and share the salvation plan. I may be writing a romance, and most have suspense added, but its important my characters look to Him, although some do go through trials and redemption takes place. I want my books to be something my granddaughters can read, and I stay true to that.
Thank you, Jo, for having me visit today. I appreciate your sweet hospitality and time to share.
