Shepherd’s Song
by Bettilu Davies

Bettilu Davies was born in Pontiac, Michigan. From an
Bettilu Davies
early age she made up stories, first telling them to a favorite teacher who wrote them down, and then writing them down herself. She loved music and studied piano for years with three concert pianists, and later taught piano. Bettilu attended Pontiac Business Institute and Moody Bible Institute where she met her husband, married, and worked at Moody Press. An editor there encouraged her to write. Bettilu later published with Marty Series with Moody Press and The Secret of the Hidden Cave with Zondervan. Shepherd’s Song is her sixth published book.

Welcome, Bettilu. What do you enjoy doing for relaxation?
I love to spend time with my children and grandchildren. I find them fascinating, whether I’m watching the children play or I’m talking with the adults about their interests. Other than that, I enjoy reading more than anything else. I tend to carry a book with me everywhere I go, even if I can only snatch a few minutes or so to read. I also paint landscapes, knit, crochet, and work in paper crafts. I tend to turn my relaxation projects into work, so have to vary my projects so what is meant to relax me doesn’t become another tension-filled job.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?
Three years ago my children gave my husband and me an all expense vacation in Gatlinburg, Tennessee for our golden anniversary. They gave us a choice: they would pay for some expensive project to fix up our home, send us on a vacation alone as a couple, or rent a house big enough to accommodate all of our children and grandchildren at a scenic spot for a week. It was a no-brainer. I’ll choose my children any time. We had a wonderful vacation, visiting Clingman’s Dome, traveling through the scenic mountains, visiting the artist colony, and playing with the children at the arcades and children’s museums.

What do you enjoy most about writing?
I like creating the characters, imagining what they would do in a given situation, and developing their personalities as they face one obstacle after another. I also like finishing a book. There’s a lot of satisfaction in that.

Please tell us a little about your novel, Shepherd’s Song.
Cautious and conservative piano teacher Gail Winslow reads murder mysteries to liven up her life. When her
hero, concert pianist Brad Shepherd, shows up on her doorstep, she is still under the influence of her latest midnight reading and thinks he is a stalker. She not only breaks his arm, but—after much apology—enters into the musical adventure of a lifetime, helping him construct a series he has long dreamed of presenting on television.

Meanwhile, Brad struggles to defeat the nagging reminders of childhood taunts here in his hometown, as well as to quell the impossible idea of making Gail a part of his life permanently. She’s a quiet homebody; how can he thrust her into the glamorous but demanding life he lives? Not until they are both forced to put their lives on the line to find a lost child does a solution present itself.

Any parting comment?
I’ve taught piano lessons for nearly fifty years. My numerous experiences with students triggered my imagination, but studying with three concert pianists and hearing their experiences set my imagination on fire. My own love of music and my struggles with performance anxiety added to the mix. While the story is fiction, it is based on a multitude of life experiences.

THE GAMBLER'S DAUGHTER
in The Pony Express Romance Collection
by Darlene Franklin

Darlene Franklin
Best-selling hybrid author Darlene Franklin's greatest
claim to fame is that she writes full-time from a nursing home. This year she expects to reach fifty unique titles in print and she’s also contributed to more than twenty nonfiction titles. Her column, “The View Through my Door,” appears monthly in Bookfun Magazine. Her most recent titles are The Pony Express Romance Collection, Love's Compass, and To Riches Again.

Welcome, Darlene. What has no one asked that you would like to share?
Andrea Stephens suggests this question: You always seem to have a book in the works. What keeps you motivated?

I’m self-motivated. But deadlines and accountability help. I used to be accountable to a writing group. Now I have deadlines.

There is always another story to tell! Often I have the basic story concept in mind long before I actually begin writing. I also am working on deadlines—that's a great motivator. I would still write every day, but not be as focused, without those looming deadlines. This year I overcommitted myself—a novella every month from April through October.

How do people react when they find out you write?
They’re usually surprised—they don’t expect someone who is still writing to live in a nursing home!
They often say, “so you must be rich.”  (If my name was Steven King or James Patterson, perhaps.)
What do you write? Mostly historical romance
An apology – “I used to read.”
And every now and then—“I’ve read one of your books.”

Do you type or write by hand? Computer? Typewriter? Legal pad?
At this point in time, I write almost exclusively on the computer. When I started writing, I didn’t even have a computer. I wrote by hand in spiral bound notebooks, riding to and from work on the bus. At night I typed what I had written on my typewriter.

Lighting Round:
Y’all or You Guys? Probably Y’all
Biscuits or Dinner Roll? Biscuits

Please tell us a little about your novella, The Gambler’s Daughter, one of nine novellas in The Pony Express Romance Collection.

Join the race from Missouri, across the plains and mountains to California and back again as brave Pony Express riders and their supporters along the route work to get mail across country in just ten days. It is an outstanding task in the years 1860 to 1861, and
only a few are up to the job. Faced with challenges of terrain, weather, hostile natives, sickness, and more, can these adventurous pioneers hold fast, and can they also find lasting love in the midst of daily trials?

The Gambler’s Daughter by Darlene Franklin.
Gambling debts drive Caroline Adams’s estranged father away from the Chelan Swing Station before her arrival. Can his replacement conquer the temptations goading them both to prove himself worthy of Caroline’s love?

A Proxy Wedding
by Toni Shiloh

Toni Shiloh is a wife, mom, and Christian fiction
Toni Shiloh
writer. Once she understood the powerful saving grace thanks to the love of Christ, she was moved to honor her Savior. She writes to bring Him glory and to learn more about His goodness.

She spends her days hanging out with her husband and their two boys. She is a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and the president of the ACFW Virginia Chapter.

You can find Toni on her website

Welcome, Toni! If you could have dinner with one person from today or history (except Jesus) who would it be? Why?
Jane Austen! I love her writing, but besides that, she was an extraordinary woman for her time. To be published in a world that felt that women writers were odd, raises my esteem of her. I would love to hear what writer tips she’d have to give.

Please describe yourself with three words.
Quiet. Prayerful. Hopeful.

What do you enjoy doing for relaxation?
Reading! :) I’m so busy with other things, that when I have a moment to truly relax, I pick up a book. Otherwise, I play video games with my family or dabble in jewelry making.

What can your readers expect from you next?
Finding Love, book two in my Maple Run series is slated to release the end of June! I’m so excited about this book. Delaney and Luke really captured my heart.

Please tell us a little about your novella, A Proxy Wedding.
Carly James values loyalty and friendship above all. So when her best friend calls asking her to be a
proxy bride, she says, ‘yes.’ How hard can it be to say ‘I do’ so that her best friend can be with the one she loves? Only, Carly never counted on the feelings that began to swirl around with the proxy groom.

Damien Nichols likes life lined up from A to Z, but when his best friend calls in a favor, disorder begins to reign. Instead of taking a quick flight to the proxy wedding, he has to take a road trip with the proxy bride. Carly’s free-spirit attitude bumps heads with his meticulous approach to life. As Damien discovers the woman underneath the carefree fa├žade, his emotions become involved.

Will love become real at A Proxy Wedding?

A Proxy Wedding is one of the stories included in A Spring of Weddings that is scheduled to release on April 29th.

BUILDING BENJAMIN
by Barbara M. Britton

Barbara M. Britton was born and raised in the San
Barbara M. Britton
Francisco Bay Area, but currently lives in Wisconsin and loves the snow—when it accumulates under three inches. She writes Christian Fiction for teens and adults. Barb has a nutrition degree from Baylor University but loves to dip healthy strawberries in chocolate. Barb kicked off her Tribes of Israel series in October with the release of Providence: Hannah’s Journey. Naomi’s journey, Building Benjamin is out now. Barb is a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, Romance Writers of America and Wisconsin Romance Writers.

Welcome, Barb. What takeaway value do you hope your readers receive after reading your book?
I had no idea this Sodom and Gomorrah-ish account was in the Book of Judges. I knew that Saul, the first king of Israel, was from the smallest tribe, the tribe of Benjamin, but I had no idea the tribe of Benjamin was almost wiped out by the other tribes of Israel (at the end of Judges). I follow three girls abducted by the Benjamites so their tribe could survive. Naomi, my main character, remains true to God and her beliefs during difficult circumstances. I hope she inspires others to do what is right in God’s sight.

How do people react when they find out you write?
People are usually amazed that I’m an author. Then, after I talk about my books, they go fan-girl or fan-guy on me (Yes, there are a few men who read my books). I’m the same old person I always was, so I try to be humble and explain that it’s my job. But, I absolutely love my job! I am thankful God places stories in my head and that they are inspired from His Word.

What’s one genre you have never written, and probably never will?
Erotica. She laughs! All my stories have a romantic thread, but I don’t write what goes on behind closed doors. Mainstream romance includes the steamy stuff, but I write Biblical romance which is passionate, but doesn’t give my characters’ secrets away. I write about characters who fall in love with a person because of who they are inside and what they believe about God. All my characters love God and follow his laws—or at least try to.

Why do you feel compelled to write—in your genre or at all?
I enjoy writing biblical fiction that brings little known Bible characters, or events, to light. I hope readers will go to the Bible and read the original account in God’s Word from where my stories are born. If my readers learn something new about God then I’m happy.

Please tell us a little about your novel, Building Benjamin: Naomi’s Journey.
Love Grows Where God Grafts the Tender Shoot.

Naomi desires to dance well enough to catch the eye of a wealthy landowner. Her father needs a
substantial bride price due to the deaths of her brothers at the hands of the tribe of Benjamin. But when Benjamites raid the Ephraimite feast and capture young girls, Naomi is bound and carried from her home by Eliab, a troubled shepherd who needs a wife.

As Naomi awaits rescue, she finds Eliab has a strong faith in God and a just reason for abducting her. A reason that affects all the tribes of Israel. The future of the tribe of Benjamin hangs in the balance, but if Naomi follows her heart and stays with Eliab to rebuild his lineage, she must forfeit her family and become a traitor to her tribe.
