Unexpected Allies and
Recurring Warts
 (Horse Haven book 2)
by Grace Marshall

Grace Marshall is the author of the Horse Haven
Grace Marshall
series as well as Person of Faith. She enjoys hanging out with her dashing husband, J. Lindsey Marshall, their saucy cat, Amerigo Vespucci, and their playful Mastiff puppy, Mini. She loves all animals but is a horse fanatic. Grace has lived in Wisconsin and Illinois, and currently resides in the Missouri hills. She believes in living life to the fullest and can’t wait to see where God will take her or have her write next!

Welcome, Grace. If you could have dinner with one person from today or history (except Jesus) who would it be? Why?
C.S. Lewis. He’s my inspiration as an author. Although he’s popular for the Narnia series, he’s also written so much more! He has written so many good books, fiction and non-fiction, and he wasn’t afraid to make a point, get intellectual, explore the truth, and approach things from a different perspective. I find his writing fascinating.

What fun or unique things can you tell us about yourself?
Since becoming married I’ve given into my desire of living life as an adventure. Together my husband and I passed up the opportunity for long term job security in my parents’ business for the penniless allure of the ever-changing journey of writers. I’ve always been somewhat wild, riding horse without saddles or bridles, and also riding motorcycles, which I convinced my husband to learn to drive as well. So pursuing the wild career of an author just seemed to fit!

What do you enjoy most about writing?
Being able to try and make a difference in people’s lives and minds. I want to make my readers laugh, cry, love, hope, and remember God is in control. Being able to present lessons and moral trials and to write encouragement for the world, or at least those who pick up my book, is my favorite part of the writing journey.

What can your readers expect from you next?
The third book in the Horse Haven series, Forward Through the Fertilizer, which is scheduled to release this September! In this next book, life in Missouri continues to wrangle with Ruth, forcing her to press on through the challenges of a brother that seems intent on blocking her love life, an unexpected conception, and a tragic illness that has everyone panicked. I’d love for readers to join me on this next adventure!

Please tell us a little about your novel, Unexpected Allies and Recurring Warts (Horse Haven book 2)
A spunky kitten on a daring rescue, a neglected mare full of love, and boys that recur like warts make Ruth’s life far from boring. For every kind person that
comes to the ranch there seems to be two warts. The attitudes and temperatures of southeast Missouri starkly contract the suburbs of Milwuakee, Wisconsin, but Ruth doesn’t have time to adjust before her father holds an open house for their horse ranch, Meredith Meadows. Ruth’s overbearing older brother seems to just add dangerous sparks to her frustration as she tries to figure out who she has to be nice to and who she actually wants to be nice to. At first, the horse lessons on the ranch start making Ruth feel as if she is back in her comfort zone until she gets tossed by one of the horses. Sometimes the best way through life is to laugh through the tears, warts, and her own attempts to mow the grass in a straight line.

Echoes of the Heart, a novella included in The Pony Express Romance Collection
by Donna Schlachter

Donna Schlachter lives in Denver with husband
Donna Schlachter
Patrick, her first-line editor and biggest fan. She writes historical suspense under her own name, and contemporary suspense under her alter ego of Leeann Betts. She is a hybrid publisher who has published a number of books under her pen name and under her own name. Her current release, Echoes of the Heart, included in a 9-in-1 novella collection titled "Pony Express Romance Collection" released April 1. Donna is also a ghostwriter and editor of fiction and non-fiction, and judges in a number of writing contests. She will be teaching an online course for American Christian Fiction Writers in June 2017, “Don’t let your subplots sink your story.” Donna loves history and research, and travels extensively for both.

Enjoy Donna’s article below about the Pony Express.

The Pony Express in a Nutshell

Most people know something about the Pony Express, but few realize it only operated from April 1860 through to November 1861. The first ride left St. Joseph, Missouri heading west, and from Sacramento, California heading east, on April 3rd, 1860.

The idea for a Pony Express was conceived in the minds of its owners because of the possibility of winning the contract for the overland US mail. Another company, Butterworth, was running a southern route that took up to three weeks to deliver to the west coast, and Majors and Waddell thought they could beat that time by taking the shorter northern route.

The irony of the matter is they never won the contract; instead, they merged with Butterworth to form the Overland Mail Company, and closed the Pony Express over $200,000 in debt.

My interest in this story came about because I met my friend Mary Davis at a writers’ conference, and I asked her what she was working on. At the time, she was doing the proposal for the book. I said I’d love to be part of it, but she said she had her authors. Still, I did some research, did a road trip, and when she emailed a month later to say one author dropped out, I was ready.

The time period, 1860, fascinates me as there were so many changes happening in America. The train is a near dream; the cross-country telegraph is nearing completion; the country is brewing for civil war; women are campaigning for voting and civil rights. In just a few short years, cameras will photograph the first war ever; telephones will be installed in people’s homes; electricity will light our lives into the dark of night.

Despite the changes, one thing is sure: The Pony Express lives on in our hearts and our folklore much longer than it actually ran.

Donna, please tell us a little about Echoes of the Heart, your novella included in the Pony Express Romance Collection.
Catherine Malloy, an orphan girl running from a compromising situation in Boston, answers a personal ad in a magazine, on behalf of her illiterate friend. Through his letters, she finds herself falling in love with this stranger. Benjamin Troudt is crippled and illiterate, and knows nothing of this ad. His route supervisor, Warton, who was helping Benjamin with the paperwork, has been given only a short time to live, and knows Benjamin needs help, so he places the ad. Can Catherine overcome her belief that the God of her parents has abandoned her? And can Benjamin allow God to open his eyes and his heart to love?

An excerpt from Donna’s novella, Echoes of the Heart
Hollenberg Pony Express Station
Kansas Territory
May 1860

Chapter 1

Catherine Malloy braced a hand against the doorframe as the stage rounded a turn. A cloud of dust encircled the coach, filtering through the gaps in the doors, the curtains, the floor, and the roof, threatening to choke her. She coughed politely behind her gloved hand, cringing at the sight of the stains on her once-white hand coverings. Her spirits were as rumpled as her sleeves and skirt. Would the dirt ever come out?

But no matter how primitive the conditions, no matter how hostile the natives or how cold the winters—all stories she’d heard about the Wild West—she would not turn back.

She had nowhere to turn back.

When she’d excitedly read the advertisement in the magazine to her friend Margaret, neither had truly contemplated just how far the Kansas Territory was from Boston. Four days on the train to St. Joseph, Missouri had been just the beginning. Three days in this bouncing torture chamber, surrounded by surly men, snot-nosed children, and sharp-tongued women caused her to question her sanity and her decision more than once. She’d already eaten more dust than she’d known existed.

In Mr. Troudt’s first letter, he’d explained that he ran a way station and needed a wife. Neither she nor Margaret knew what that was. They knew a man from Australia, who talked about working at a sheep station. Perhaps a way station was similar.

Not that any of that mattered. She had no reason to go back. No family. No job.

Not after the way Master Talbott had approached her.

HIDDEN ASSETS
by Leeann Betts

Leeann Betts writes contemporary suspense, while
Leeann Betts
her real-life persona, Donna Schlachter, pens historical suspense. She has released five titles in her cozy mystery series, By the Numbers, with Hidden Assets releasing the end of June. In addition, Leeann has written a devotional for accountants, bookkeepers, and financial folk, Counting the Days, and with her real-life persona, Donna Schlachter, has published a book on writing, Nuggets of Writing Gold, a compilation of essays, articles, and exercises on the craft. She publishes a free quarterly newsletter that includes a book review and articles on writing and books of interest to readers and writers. You can subscribe here to her newsletter or follow Leeann here.

Welcome, Leeann. How do people react when they find out you write?
Most people react in one of two ways: they move on to another topic, like they’re afraid I’m going to ask them to buy one of my books. This usually happens when the person is a writer. Or they ask if I’ve been published. When I tell them yes, and then offer them a card, now they take me more seriously. Usually I figure out what genre they prefer, and tell them about the books I’ve written in that genre.

Do you believe in writer’s block? If so how often do you get it? How do you fix it?
I don’t believe in writer’s block. I have had times when I didn’t want to write, but that’s different. I think sometimes writers experience a not wanting to write and call it writer’s block. I look at writing like this: could I call up my boss and say, “Sorry, I don’t feel like coming in to work today. I have banker’s block (or whatever job you do to pay the bills).” It wouldn’t work with an employer, and so it doesn’t work for me.

There are times I don’t have any words in me. That happens if I haven’t been reading enough or refilling my tank through movies and videos, which I find is a quick way to top up the tank.

And then there are times when the project I’m working on isn’t inspiring me, or I’ve reached that middle muddle where I feel like I’m drowning in the book and won’t ever finish it. Sometimes I’m struggling with writing a scene that dredges up deep emotions or painful memories, and I don’t really want to push through.

In all cases, my solution is to write. I can pick up another project and get it off my desk. Write a few blogs and schedule them. Start writing at a different point in my story. Write a character sketch and ask tough questions.

But what I always finds unsticks me is to pray, breathe, think, and act—in other words, type.

What’s one genre you have never written, and probably never will?
Never written erotica, probably never will, because it goes against my deeply held religious and moral beliefs. I believe erotica is simply pornography by another name. Women are very relationship-based and emotion-based, and erotica really doesn’t help. It might make us feel titillated for the moment, but just like one-night stands and casual sex, it leaves us wanting something more. I prefer to show committed characters in marriage relationships who experience romance and physical intimacy without spelling out every move. What happens behind closed doors is a lot more interesting to most women readers than what is paraded out in the open.

Lighting Round:
Vacation: Beach or Mountains? Beach
Y’all or You Guys? Y’all
Biscuits or Dinner Roll? Gluten free dinner roll
Spring, summer, winter, or fall? Summer
Laptop or Desktop? Laptop
Mug or teacup? Mug, although teacups make me feel sophisticated

Please tell us a little about your novel, Hidden Assets.
Carly Turnquist, forensic accountant, responds to a call from her friend, Anne, who is in the middle of a nasty divorce, and travels to Wyoming to help find assets Anne thinks her husband has stolen. But the mystery begins before Carly even arrives when she sees a man thrown off a train. Except there’s no body. Husband Mike uncovers an illegal scam in a computer program he has been asked to upgrade, and then Anne is arrested for her ex’s murder. Can Carly figure out what’s going on, and why a strange couple is digging in Anne’s basement? Or will she disappear along with the artwork, coins, and money?

DEFIANCE
by L. R. Burkard

Linore Rose Burkard wrote a trilogy of regency
Linore Rose Burkard
romances
for the Christian market before there were any regencies for the Christian market. Published with Harvest House, her books opened the genre for the CBA. She also writes YA Suspense/Apocalyptic fiction as L.R. Burkard. Married with five children, she home-schools her youngest daughter, teaches workshops for writers, and is a writing conference coordinator. Her latest PULSE EFFEX SERIES takes readers into a "chilling possible future for America, while affirming the power of faith in the darkest of times."

Welcome, Linore. What fun or unique things can you tell us about yourself?
My absolutely favorite summer activity is water-jogging about 100 laps around our pool and then lounging on a float doing nothing. There is no relaxation quite as sublime for me as being on the water. Growing up in Queens, NY, we had a backyard pool, and my dad had a boat that we took out on the Sound. (The Sound becomes Manhattan Bay to the west.) So I have lots of good water memories. One of my almost-finished novels, Falling In, has a lot of water-related plot content.   The title refers to the heroine's falling in love, but the cover image shows a woman's legs on a floating lounge cushion, so the double meaning is there. I had a lot of fun writing that book.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?
I like to be in the mountains or at a lake. Last year, we rented a houseboat in Kentucky and had a blast. (Except for mooring the boat each night. The steep hillsides made it downright treacherous.)

Please describe yourself with three words.
Christian, passionate, Type A!

Please tell us a little about your novel, Defiance: Book Three in the Pulse Effex Series
In this third installment of the PULSE EFFEX SERIES, foreign soldiers and fellow Americans gone rogue are just the beginning of what Andrea, Lexie and Sarah must face. Beneath the threat of nuclear strikes and guerrilla armies, the girls long for a free country in which to live--and love. Survival means resistance must give way to defiance. But can ordinary teens and their families withstand powerful forces and keep hope alive?

RESCUE ME
by Sandy Nadeau

Sandy Nadeau loves to go on adventures, photograph
Sandy Nadeau
them and equally loves to write about them. She and her husband did a lot of four-wheeling in the back country of Colorado. Sandy wrote a community news column in a small newspaper for twelve years, a few magazine articles and two novels with adventure, mystery, romance, but most importantly sharing God’s love. She is a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers and has two books out. Married for 40 years, she and her husband love life as grandparents to three after the big move to Texas.

Welcome, Sandy. If you could have dinner with one person from today or history (except Jesus) who would it be? Why?
This is always a challenging question, because there’s so many. I’ll be a little different. At this point in life, and with the bombardment of news, I would choose Mike Rowe. I think he is one of the funniest guys out there and highly intelligent. Not to mention an amazing singer. It would be a hoot and certainly a diversion from all the bad going on in the world, to sit down and have dinner with that guy.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?
We were blessed to spend 10 days on the Grand Cayman several years ago. It was my first experience with snorkeling. Being a land-loving, chicken in water, this was a big step for me in my list of adventures. My hubby and brother-in-law were there with me. I had a death grip on my hubby’s arm and threatened him if he swam away from my side, but once they got me in that crystal clear water and I put my masked face under the surface, I didn’t need anyone. To see an entirely different world filled with vibrant colored fish, coral of every shape and size, creatures I never could have imagined, and so many exciting things, it was the most magical time of my life. During that week, we experienced the adventure of our lives daily. Even having a nurse shark swim below us (that was a little too exciting, since I didn’t understand that was a harmless one at the time), and Moray Eels, lobsters, Eagle Rays and then one day we swam with Stingrays. It was so exhilarating.

Do you have a dedicated place to write, or a nook or corner of a room, or the kitchen table?
These days, I have a few. I have an office. A really nice one. I also write in the recliner with my lap top most often. But I look forward to writing on our back porch now that the weather has cooled off in Texas. We moved here from Colorado last January. From March through June it was fabulous out back. On the right is a picture of the view I have. It’s very relaxing.

What can readers who enjoy your book do to help make it successful?
Tell ALL their friends and please write a review on Amazon or any other ordering site. Give them as books. Say something on your Facebook page. Tweet about it. Just spread the word! I would appreciate that so much! In fact, do this for any author. It helps a writer’s career.

Please tell us a little about your novel, Rescue Me.
First Responder Ronnie Spencer has a no-dating- firefighters rule. She lost her father to a fire, and
won't risk the heartbreak of losing someone else. But when Steve McNeal returns, Ronnie's heart is tested. How can she swear off dating a firefighter when she has to work with the one man she used to love?

When the unthinkable happens, Ronnie has doubts. How can a loving God allow tragedy to stalk her life again? As her faith wavers, Ronnie must decide. Will their blossoming relationship be quickly extinguished by the very thing she feared, or will Ronnie trust God and allow her heart to be rescued—even if that means giving it to a firefighter?
