Train Ride to Heartbreak
Included in The Mail-Order Brides Collection
by Donna Schlachter

Donna Schlachter
Donna lives in Denver with husband Patrick, her first-line editor and biggest fan. She writes historical suspense under her own name, and contemporary suspense under her alter ego of Leeann Betts. She is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers and Sisters In Crime; facilitates a local critique group, and teaches writing classes and courses. Donna is also a ghostwriter and editor of fiction and non-fiction, and judges in a number of writing contests. She loves history and research, and travels extensively for both. Donna is proud to be represented by Terrie Wolf of AKA Literary Management.

Welcome, Donna. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things would you absolutely want to have with you?
My Bible, an everlasting pen, and a huge journal. I couldn’t stand not being able to read the Word or writing.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not writing?
Traveling for research.

How has travel been involved in your writing and/or research? What’s been your most memorable research experience?
Travel has been very important. I like to visit places I’m going to write about, even though I set most of my stories in fictional towns. My most memorable research experience to date was visiting the Pony Express Museum in St. Joe, Missouri, to stand where the riders did, to see the barn where the horses stayed, and to imagine what it was like to be there the first time the first rider took off heading west.

Lightning Round:
Vacation: Beach or Mountains?  Beach. So long as it’s warm.
Y’all or You Guys? Y’all
Biscuits or Dinner Roll? Biscuits, so long as they’re gluten free
Spring, summer, winter, or fall? Summer. Always
Laptop or Desktop? Laptop.
Mug or teacup? Mug. Although teacups are fun for fancy occasions

Please tell us a little about your novella, Train Ride to Heartbreak included in The Mail-Order Brides Collection.
The Mail-Order Brides Collection follows seven brides as they meet their grooms for the first time—after they answer an ad for a wife.

John needs a wife; Mary needs a husband. But on the train, Mary meets another and falls in love. Now they both need to decide whether they’ll honor their commitment or choose love over duty.

GRACE RESTORED
by Toni Shiloh

Toni Shiloh
Toni Shiloh is a wife, mom, and Christian fiction writer. Once she understood the powerful saving grace thanks to the love of Christ, she was moved to honor her Savior. She writes to bring Him glory and to learn more about His goodness.

She spends her days hanging out with her husband and their two boys. She is a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and president of the Virginia Chapter.

You can find her on her website.

Welcome, Toni. What takeaway value do you hope your readers receive after reading your book?
That we can find grace in the midst of our hurts and our sin. God offers it freely, we only have to accept it.

What is your favorite dessert? If you don’t like sweets. What is your favorite meal?
I love cheesecake. Salted caramel cheesecake. Caramel turtle. Pumpkin. I could go on.

Do you believe in writer’s block? If so how often do you get it? How do you fix it?
Yes but mine comes in the form of character block. It’s like they refuse to talk to me or help me out with their story. So I pray and hound the characters and pray some more and write through the sludge.

Lightning Round:
Vacation: Beach or Mountains? Beach!
Y’all or You Guys? Y’all. I was born and raised in Texas.
Biscuits or Dinner Roll? Bread. All. Of. The. Bread!
Spring, summer, winter, or fall? Summer! I love to be warm.
Laptop or Desktop? Laptop. So easy to use and carry around.
Mug or teacup? Mug. I’m afraid I’d break a teacup.

Please tell us a little about your novel, Grace Restored
Michelle Thomas has it all. Beautiful and successful, she’s just opened her own law firm in Freedom Lake. What more could she want? When her old flame rolls back into Freedom Lake, she’s intent on ignoring him. But how can she give the widower and his precious twin girls the cold shoulder?

Still reeling from the death of his wife, Guy Pierre returns to Freedom Lake to take over as town sheriff and raise his twin daughters. Alone. Yet, life keeps throwing Michelle in his path and sparks of interest began to rise.

Will old secrets tear them apart again or can they find the faith to let God’s grace restore what has been broken?

T.M. Brown, Southern Mystery/Suspense

TESTAMENT,
AN UNEXPECTED RETURN
by T.M. Brown

T.M. Brown
T. M. Brown is a Southern boy at heart, although he’s lived and traveled in many states far removed from his beloved boyhood roots in Georgia and Florida. He returned to his Southern roots several years ago while his two sons were still in school and regularly traveled throughout the South before returning to college shortly after his youngest son graduated. In the last fifteen years he has preached, taught and coached in Alabama, Georgia and Florida until his wife and he moved outside of Atlanta and retired to write, travel, and spoil grandchildren.

Welcome, Mike. What takeaway value do you hope your readers receive after reading your book(s)?
Life doesn’t always work out as we intend, but if we will only strive to do what is right and persevere, even if that course leads us into uncomfortable, even seemingly unjust circumstances, God will reveal his providential purpose. Doing right always trumps being right. In both of my books, time-lost Shiloh struggles with inevitable 21st-Century changes and challenges. But one thing remains a constant: selfishness and greed of mankind. The motive remains undeterred even when the methods and means progress with the times.

Ultimately, my stories are parables about real-life choices and consequences that eventually I desire my five grandkids to read as a legacy of love from their Poppy. I figure if I can connect with them, my reading audience certainly will as well.

How do people react when they find out you write?
Since I began writing novels late in life, most of my family and long-time friends scratched their heads and smiled. Some knew me during my three decades in the corporate business world, and others knew me after I went back to school and ultimately seminary. When they heard I decided to write Southern novels, especially mystery/suspense stories many were skeptical. They knew of my inspirational and devotional writing but were curious about my transition into publishing novels with a wide audience appeal. Frankly, so was I. But, I now am convinced that God brings us into uncomfortable places for his purposes. I definitely am not Moses, but I can understand his pushback when asked by God to serve as God’s voice to the people in Egypt. Of course, like Moses, God brought a partner along to help along the way. For me, a phenomenal writing coach and editor. She helped me to grasp the nuances of novel writing to bring my storytelling gift to life. Thanks to Kari Scare (KariLynnScare.com) the naysayers and skeptics became my most ardent supporters to promote my books.

Do you type or write by hand? Computer? Typewriter? Legal pad?
Yes, to the above! I doddle and scrawl out scenes, storylines, and character development ideas in a menagerie of spiral notebooks, legal pads, and even composition books. Armed with my scribbled notes and ideas, then I begin the arduous task of bringing the story to life, scene by scene banging away on my iMac keyboard. Okay, I confess to having progressed beyond the typewriter. Even while typing out my story, I maintain several three-ring binders chock-full of printed out photos, background research, and expanded character and setting profiles, all cluttered with sticky notes and paper-clipped items jutting out in every direction. Thankfully, I progressed to some author-friendly computer programs, such as Scrivner and Evernote too.

Lightning Round:
Vacation: Beach or Mountains? My wife and I love the beach, but a cabin in the mountains is our first choice.
Y'all or You Guys? Y’all!!!! In fact, all y’all works too.  Biscuits or Dinner Roll? Biscuits!!!!
Spring, summer, winter or fall? Summer, but Fall’s a close second.
Laptop or Desktop? Desktop - love my iMac.
Mug or teacup? Mug! A big one.

Please tell us a little about your novel, Testament, An Unexpected Return (officially releases March 27, 2018).
In this sequel to Sanctuary, A Legacy of Memories (which the author recommends reading first), Theo and Liddy are finally sinking deep roots into their new hometown of Shiloh. Friendships are blossoming as Liddy ponders an offer to become the new art teacher at Shiloh High while Theo sends off his manuscript for Jessie’s Story to be published. Life appears to be settling down, but ominous shadows from the town’s past herald more tragedy lies ahead in little old Shiloh.

“The testament of a man lies not in the magnitude of possessions and property left to his heirs, but the reach of his legacy long after his death.” Theo Phillips

AN IMPROPER PROPOSAL
by Davalynn Spencer

Davalynn Spencer
Wife and mother of professional rodeo bullfighters, Davalynn Spencer writes heart-tugging, cowboy romance set along the Front Range of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. She is an ECPA and Publisher's Weekly bestselling author and winner of the Will Rogers Gold Medallion for Inspirational Western Fiction, as well as an award-winning rodeo journalist and former crime-beat reporter. Davalynn makes her home in Colorado where she caters to Blue the Cowdog and mouse detectors Annie and Oakley. She loves hearing from her readers and can be reached via her website.

Welcome, Davalynn. What takeaway value do you hope your readers receive after reading your book?
I want readers to find hope in my books—the belief that they can take the same principles used by my characters and apply them to their lives, whether it is forgiveness, faith, or fortitude.

How do people react when they find out you write?
Reactions to the “real” me have been varied. I’ve seen expressions transform from polite interest to thrilled eagerness when people learn that I’m not only an author, but an author of inspirational romance. Last week at an office supply store where I had the manuscript for my next release printed out for a beta reader, the clerk who assisted me wanted to shake my hand because he’s always wanted to be a writer.

What was the main inspiration for the new book? Had the idea been on your mind for a while or just popped into it one day?
I was sitting by the woodstove one wintry evening when a “trailer video” played in my head. A loud gunshot, the pinch of gun powder, the jerk of a heart stunned in shock as a mail-order bride’s groom-to-be is murdered before her very eyes. At that moment, I knew I had to write Mae Ann Remington’s story.

Lightning Round:
Vacation: Beach or Mountains? Pacific Northwest where mountains meet the beach.
Y’all or You Guys? You guys
Biscuits or Dinner Roll? Biscuits, of course.
Spring, summer, winter, or fall? Fall – bring on the color!
Laptop or Desktop? Desktop. Actually, I have both, but the trust level is much higher for my desktop.
Mug or teacup? Mug

Please tell us a little about your novel, An Improper Proposal.

Love hadn't brought her to Colorado. But it might be the one thing that keeps her there.

Widowed before she says “I do,” mail order bride Mae Ann Remington does the only thing she can in a new town with no family and no means—she proposes.

Rancher Cade Parker is at the bank to withdraw cash for his wayward sister, not find himself a wife. But that’s exactly what happens after a robbery leaves a man dead and the headstrong bride with nothing but a bold business proposition. Convinced he’s gone loco, Cade accepts Mae Ann’s offer, and is soon teaching the city gal to ride, shoot, and do what he tells her. She manages the first two fairly well, but gets her back up at the third.

A greedy neighbor’s land-lust challenges Mae Ann’s inheritance of her former intended’s run-down farm and sends Cade and Mae Ann to court and into the jaws of a deadly storm. Not only must Cade fight to keep his new bride safe, he’s got to keep his emotions from stampeding out of control. Taking on snakes, scoundrels, and second chances is one thing, but falling in love wasn’t part of the deal.

A PRICKLY AFFAIR
by Donna Schlachter
included in BOUQUET OF BRIDES collection

Donna Schlachter
Donna Schlachter lives in Denver with husband Patrick, her first-line editor and biggest fan. She writes historical suspense under her own name, and contemporary suspense under her alter ego of Leeann Betts. She is a hybrid author who has published a number of books under her pen name and under her own name. Donna is proud to be represented by Terrie Wolf of AKA Literary Management.

Please enjoy Donna’s article about writing A Prickly Affair, which is included in Bouquet of Brides, a collection of stories from multiple authors:

The Full Scoop Behind . . . A Prickly Affair
by Donna Schlachter

When I decided on the heroine for my story, I wanted her to be a writer who used a pen name (just like me). Cactus Lil has never experienced love, yet she writes hot and steamy romance stories for a New York City magazine under the pen name Daisy Duncan. I wanted her to be strong and independent, yet still realize there is something missing in her life.

The hero for my story needed to be someone who Cactus Lil—and the reader—would be attracted to because of the fact it would be obvious he was completely out of his depths in Arizona. Accomplished, dapper, and suave on the streets of New York City, he is lost in the Wild West. And, I wanted him to make a tough decision for the right reason, not because he would benefit from it personally, but because his feelings for the heroine would compel him to demonstrate agape love for perhaps the first time in his life.

The villain is kept off the page so as to not detract from the growing relationship between Lily and Peter. Peter’s employer—who is also his uncle—seemed the ideal candidate. We meet him through telegrams and through Peter’s thoughts about him. In fact, that he is also Peter’s uncle didn’t come to me until I was at the end of the story.

For the time period, I wanted to keep it close to my favorite time, which is the 1860’s to 1880’s. It had to be after Cave Creek, Arizona was founded, so I picked 1858. I did some research into what was going on in the area at the time, including weather, rainfall, sunrise/sunset times, and the extent of cattle ranching and the population of the area, all of which fell directly into line with the story I had in mind.

I wanted the setting to be a place that was special to me. So I decided on Cave Creek, Arizona, the town where my father and my step-mother (who I dearly loved) were married, and where their ashes are scattered together. I love the area, the wilderness of the desert blended with the lushness of land near the river.

I hope readers get the message that’s buried beneath the romance story. I write stories of second—and third—and fourth chances from a God who is bigger than our mistakes, so that message is in this story. I also wanted to have a character demonstrate the agape love of God, which I managed to include.

Welcome, Donna. Please tell us a little about your story, A Prickly Affair, which is included in Bouquet of Brides.
A rough-and-tumble cowgirl longs for true love, but is afraid to let down her prickly exterior when a city slicker from New York City, with less-than-honorable intentions, tries to win her heart and her hand.

Lily Duncan—“Cactus Lil” to friend and foe alike—is as prickly as her name implies, and she likes it that way. Arizona in 1885 is a land as harsh as the moon, but Lil, born and raised near Cave Creek, feels at one with the sand, rocks, and giant saguaros. She loves living in the desert, and is happiest on her own on her small cattle ranch near Cave Creek, Arizona. Although she’s never been in love before, she pens romantic short stories for a magazine under her pen name of Daisy Duncan.

Peter Golding has never been west of the Mississippi, but a tender young woman named Daisy who writes of love and relationships intrigues him. Through reading her powerful descriptions of what love should be, Daisy’s stories have captured a part of his heart.

When Peter’s uncle sends him to find Miss Daisy Duncan and bring her back to New York City, Peter decides to take matters a step further and bring her back as his bride—surely then his uncle will be impressed with her. But when he arrives, he quickly realizes that Miss Lily Duncan is no shrinking violet waiting to be rescued. In fact, she has to rescue him several times.

Cactus Lil finds her heart torn between this stranger from the east and her desire for independence. If she surrenders to her feelings, will she be forced to do his bidding? When she finds a telegram from her editor telling Peter to bring her back or lose his job, she believes his attentions to be self-serving. Will Peter choose her or his job? And will she decide to surrender her heart or send him packing—again?
