SILENT PARTNER
BY LEEANN BETTS

Leeann Betts
Leeann Betts writes contemporary suspense, while her real-life persona, Donna Schlachter, pens historical suspense. She has released nine titles in her cozy mystery series, the most recent, Silent Partner. In addition, Leeann has written a devotional for accountants, bookkeepers, and financial folk, and with her real-life persona, Donna Schlachter, has published two books on writing. She publishes a free quarterly newsletter that includes a book review and articles on writing and books of interest to readers and writers.

Welcome, Leeann. What is on your to-read list?
About 100 books I’ve picked up over the last few years (read 5 years or more for some of them). And still more to come, I’m sure.

What would you do with your life if you didn't write?
I guess I would paint more. Recently began painting, illustrating, and developing a note card line.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
Spare time? What is that? Seriously, I love to read, so curling up for an hour in the evening is a real treat. And I love to watch DVD’s, where I get to pick what’s on the schedule, no commercials, and I can bleep out the bleep-worthy parts.

Lightning Round:
Vacation: Beach or Mountains?  Beach. So long as it’s warm.

Y’all or You Guys? Y’all.

Biscuits or Dinner Roll? Biscuits. Unless it’s Mom’s fresh-from-the-oven homemade dinner rolls.

Spring, summer, winter, or fall? Summer. Again, the heat.

Laptop or Desktop? Laptop, although I’ve got mine set up on a desk, with a separate keyboard and mouse.

Mug or teacup? Mug. Although a teacup is special, don’t you think?

Please tell us a little about your novel, Silent Partner.
Carly and Mike take the vacation of a lifetime—an Alaskan cruise. Unfortunately, Carly can't turn off her nose for trouble. Or mystery. Pretty soon she's embroiled with a series of allegations, innuendoes, overheard conversations, and even a shoving match. And before she knows it—a body. Can Carly figure out who the killer is before she ends up floating on an iceberg—or worse?

TELL HER NO LIES
BY KELLY IRVIN

Kelly Irvin
Bestseller Kelly Irvin is the author of fourteen books, including Amish romance and romantic suspense. Publishers Weekly called A Deadly Wilderness “a solid romantic suspense debut.” She followed up with No Child of Mine. The two-time ACFW Carol finalist worked as a newspaper reporter for six years writing stories on the Texas-Mexico border. Those experiences fuel her romantic suspense novels set in Texas. A retired public relations professional, Kelly now writes fiction full-time. She lives with her husband, photographer Tim Irvin, in San Antonio. They are the parents of two children, two grandchildren, and two ornery cats. Visit Kelly online at her website

From the back cover:
Even the most admired families have secrets to hide…

Nina Fischer carries a camera wherever she goes—so she can view life through a filter. Safely. After her mother abandoned her to the streets, Nina has kept people at a distance, including her uncle, who adopted Nina and her sister. Wealthy and proud, he is a good man, a fair judge, and someone many in San Antonio admire.

But when he is murdered, and the detective assigned to the case accuses Nina of the crime, she knows she must act. She’s determined to use her journalism background to find the real killer. The two men in her life want to help, but can she trust them? She’s known Rick since they were children, but now he’s an attorney whose political aspirations seem more important than Nina’s tragic loss. And then there’s Aaron, a news videographer; using their friendship could break the biggest story of his career.

Following the evidence leads Nina on a journey of discovery into her father’s shocking masquerade as a law-abiding, family-loving Christian. Unlocking these secrets could prove fatal, but it’s the only way Nina will ever be able to trust love again.

Combining romance and suspense, bestselling author Kelly Irvin’s Tell Her No Lies is a high-stakes race for the truth.

From Jo:
This is the first romantic suspense novel by Kelly Irvin I have read. I enjoyed it very much, just as I enjoy her Amish novels. The suspense kept me turning pages and at times I wasn’t sure I knew who the criminal was. The suspense continues in Nina's choosing between the two men in her life.

7 Daring Damsels Don’t Let the
Norms of Their Eras Hold Them Back

Chapter 1
Terrace Addition
A bedroom community outside Albuquerque, New Mexico
1925

“You will marry him, or you’ll not spend another night under my roof, you ungrateful child.”

Millie Watkins focused on the vein in her father’s temple, the one that emerged, pulsating in tempo with the staccato timing of his words.

He was angry for sure.

She stepped back, putting another foot or so between them. Just out of reach of his ham-sized fists. One of the cats—Mouser or Calico, she wasn’t certain—screeched when her foot made contact with its tail. She staggered to regain her balance, grabbing at a kitchen chair to stay upright.

His hobnailed boots were weapons as formidable as his hands, and she’d not fall victim to either today.

She raised her chin. “I won’t marry that pimple-faced child cleverly disguised as the postmaster’s assistant. Angus Portman is rude, lewd, and crude, as well you know.”

“That boy is as fine a catch as you’ll ever hope to hook. It’s not like you’re any great shakes, girlie.”

Despite hearing these words—and others like them—all her life, they still stung, and she blinked back tears. No, she wasn’t as beautiful as her mother—God rest her soul—but few women were.

“You can’t force me.”

Her words rang hollow in her own ears, and rather than convincing her father to do as she wished, they fueled the sneer that started with his eyes then made its way down to his mouth, revealing teeth yellowed by tobacco, worn down through use, and missing because of bar fights. “Git your things and be gone, then. Cain’t afford to feed you no longer.”

She exhaled. He spoke the truth. A hardscrabble widower farmer, with four younger than her. The next in line, Anna, was of an age to leave school and take care of the house.

He was right. He didn’t need her. Couldn’t afford to keep her.

Didn’t want her.

She nodded. “I’ll be gone in an hour.”

“You ain’t got that much stuff. Git now.”

She turned and left the kitchen, climbing the ladder to the loft she shared with her sister and brothers. Thankfully, they were in school and wouldn’t see her humiliation. She was more of a mother to them than a sister, and her heart ached that she couldn’t say a proper good-bye. Let them know she wasn’t leaving them forever, the way their ma had. There in the morning, dead by the time they came home from school.

No, she’d leave them a note. Let them know she’d keep in touch. Send money when she became famous. Bring them to live with her in California.

Because that’s where she was headed—the silver screen in Hollywood. As she shoved her few belongings into a pillowcase—she didn’t even own a proper carpet bag or trunk—she revisited the glamor of the movies as depicted in the few dog-eared magazines the pharmacist traded for sweeping the shop and stocking the shelves.

The secret she kept from everybody.

The only thing she owned that she didn’t have to share with anybody else.

That, and her dreams.

Images of Greta Garbo greeting her on the movie set of their next feature film. Of John Barrymore holding her hand in the dark. Or a comedy routine with Charlie Chaplin.

She shivered with delight. She’d show her father, that ugly Angus Portman, and the whole neighborhood that she was better than they thought.

Welcome, Donna. Let's have some fun with the
